Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) Powder
Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), also known as Polyvinylidene Difluoride, plays a core role in the manufacture of lithium batteries and is an indispensable key material. First, as a separator material for lithium batteries, it can effectively isolate the positive and negative electrodes of the battery to prevent short circuits. Second, PVDF powder also acts as an electrode binder, providing strong bonding force to firmly bond the active material to the current collector to prevent it from falling off during charging and discharging, thereby extending the battery life and improving safety performance.

Unique Physical and Chemical Properties of PVDF Material
Compared with other common commercial fluorothermoplastics, Polyvinylidene fluoride PVDF stands out for its lower melting point and excellent heat deflection temperature. When subjected to load, its heat deflection temperature is significantly higher than other materials. These unique physical properties enable Polyvinylidene fluoride material to maintain excellent performance in high temperature environments.
PVDF powder is made by polymerization of vinylidene fluoride monomers. The fluorine atoms in its molecular chain give PVDF excellent chemical stability, making it resistant to corrosion by most organic solvents and strong acids and alkalis. In addition, PVDF powder also has high thermal stability, with a melting point usually above 170°C and a long-term use temperature of up to 150°C.
There are two main phases of PVDF chemical, α phase and β phase. These two phases are different in structure, which in turn affects the physical and chemical properties of PVDF. In particular, β-phase PVDF has excellent piezoelectric properties, making it excellent in applications such as sensors and actuators.
Main Properties of Lithium Battery Separator Grade Polyvinylidene Fluoride PVDF
Excellent chemical resistance. PVDF material can resist corrosion from most acids, alkalis and solvents, and is particularly suitable for long-term stable use in corrosive environments.
Good electrical properties. PVDF powder has a high dielectric constant and low dielectric loss, and is suitable for electronic fields such as capacitors and battery separators. Its electrical insulation also ensures safety during use.
High mechanical strength. PVDF lithium battery separator have high tensile strength and tear strength, and can remain stable when subjected to external forces, making them suitable for high-strength engineering plastic products.
High heat resistance. PVDF chemical can be used for a long time in a temperature range of -40°C to 150°C, and has good thermal stability.
Excellent weather resistance. Polyvinylidene fluoride can be exposed outdoors for a long time without significant aging, and is suitable for outdoor equipment and architectural coatings.
Good processing properties. Polyvinylidene difluoride is easily processed into products of various shapes and sizes, and has good stability during processing, which is conducive to efficient and stable production.
Applications of PVDF Material in the Electrical Field
Lithium-ion battery separator. PVDF is the standard binder material used in the production of lithium-ion battery composite electrodes. Polyvinylidene fluoride is used because it is chemically inert in the potential range used and does not react with electrolytes or lithium. Fluorine-based polymers such as PVDF have always received great attention because of their good chemical stability and good affinity for electrolytes. Battery separators are an essential component in batteries, used to separate the positive and negative active materials of the battery to prevent the battery from short-circuiting.
As a positive electrode binder, PVDF can connect the positive electrode active material, conductive agent and current collector, thereby reducing electrode impedance and battery polarization. Due to its strong high voltage resistance, good thermal stability and easy dispersion, PVDF is the most commonly used oily positive electrode binder, accounting for about 90% of the market share.
Used as wire insulation. It combines flexibility, light weight, low thermal conductivity, strong chemical corrosion resistance and heat resistance. Most of the 30-gauge fine wires used in wirewound circuit assembly and printed circuit board rework are insulated with polyvinylidene difluoride.
Used to manufacture tactile sensor arrays, inexpensive strain gauges, and lightweight audio transducers. Piezoelectric panels made of PVDF material are used in the Student Dust Counter, a scientific instrument on the New Horizons space probe that measures dust density outside the solar system.
